A while back I wrote an article commenting on Yahoo’s public declaration that they were effectively conceding to Google in the search market. The point of the article was that Yahoo was not necessarily giving up as a business, but rather focusing its efforts on more modern forms of search. And what are these more modern forms of search? In a word, social networks which includes social bookmarking and variants on social bookmarking.
What is Social Bookmarking

How many times have you heard “A link has to have this PR or that PR to be of value” or “link only to relevant sites” and a myriad of other “Expert” advice on the value of links and reciprocal links?
As a webmaster myself I grew increasingly weary of hearing how “important” my links were in the eyes of a search engine. Now this may sound brave or stupid of me but believe me when I say it is neither. I could not give a FLYING HOOT how important Google, Yahoo, MSN or the “Gurus” think my sites are and I don’t care what my PR is.

We all know that link building is an important aspect of SEO. Most of the websites I look at are reasonably well optimized, at least in terms of “on page” factors, but they’re usually in terrible shape when it comes to links – both within the website and within the area of link popularity.
Among my students, one of the most frequently asked questions is “how many links do I need to get my site ranked better?” At SEO Research Labs, this question has been the subject of much study, of course. It’s a simple question, but the answer can be complicated. Fortunately, the answer is usually “a lot less than you think.”

Many of you have heard of submitting your website, but what does this really mean? What places should you really submit your website? What about submitting to thousands of search engines and directories through some website promotion service?
What Pages To Submit:
At the minimum, you should submit your home page. Many search engines will promise to find and crawl the rest of your website automatically (in their own good time). But if they don’t discourage you from doing so, I would submit several of the important pages in your site. For example, a site map is definitely something I would want to submit, since it should have direct links to the rest of your website.

There is a tactic out there embraced by bloggers but rarely used by typical websites. It is called Link Baiting.
In this article I explain what link baiting is and how everyone, not just bloggers, can use it to build quality links.
This is a topic that’s been around for a while but I don’t think a lot of people know what it is, or how to use it to their advantage.
I think the name “Link Baiting” could be considered a black hat technique which is why most people wouldn’t consider it as a legitïmate organic tactic.

In December, I published an article on the effect of purchasing links for pagerank. Much to my surprise, I got quite a bit of feedback – most of which was negative. The feedback echoed a sentiment that I have seen from more than one person involved in the SEO industry. It is a sentiment that seems to think that Google is happily manipulating the entire SEO and webmaster community for their own profitable gain. The whole idea seemed like a conspiracy.
I generally do not like conspiracies.

How does web content really affect SEO? It’s often said that the answer is simply that content does not affect SEO very much – it’s all about more technical issues. Yet a website’s content still plays an enormous and fairly direct role in search engine ranking.
Of course, the whole goal of the search engines’ ranking schemes is precisely to deliver good, relevant content to users. The mechanism for how search engines select and reward good, relevant content is essentially just a technical issue, though admittedly an extremely important technical issue.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) can be the difference between a small, barely profitable or visible website and a traffïc magnet website. There are a lot of ways, both good and bad, to influence the search engines. Some search engines react to certain strategies better than others. Some even have conflicting strategies that they react to. To document all of these things would require a significant number of pages and research that goes beyond the scope of this article.

Ranking your website highly on one of the “big three” search engines (Google, Yahoo or MSN) is a daunting task let alone ranking your website highly on all three. Three engines, three algorithms, three different sets of rules - and yet there are websites out there that have first page rankings across them all – how do they do it?
While all of the major search engines use different algorithms, the end goal of all three is the same: to provide the searcher with the most relevant results available. It is this one common thread that makes it possible for an SEO to rank a website highly across all the major engines. While there are a variety of factors at play and an even wider variation in the weïght each of these factors are given – the possible variations that can produce relevant results are limited.
