Hidden Links Raise Eyebrows

Isn’t it interesting the places Lady Drama chooses to drop her robe, spinning everybody into gawking with covered mouths and gossip to spread? The whispers immediately crescendoed into a web-rattling holler across the servers-Financial Times was busted for hidden links.

And so, all the elements of drama present themselves in exquisite giddiness, those words that excite the most stoic browser of book covers-Deceit, Betrayal, Greed, Hypocrisy, Corruption. The dirt, man, the dirt. We’re on the edge of our seats to see if Google serves the search warrant to a major Internet player, or will power triumph over justice?

Cosmetic Changes at Google Precede Larger Overhaul

Cosmetic Changes at Google Precede Larger Overhaul
By Jim Hedger, StepForth News Editor, StepForth Placement Inc. (c) 2005

Google is undergoing some of the most sweeping changes in its short, seven year history. As of next week, Google will have finished sorting what might be its largest algorithm shift ever as the final points of the 3.5 part Bourbon Update were installed last Monday. This update has been staggered into three and a half sections in order to avoid a massive amount of dislocation in established rankings as was seen in previous major updates. While changes stemming from the Bourbon Update have not actually manifested into a full reordering of Google’s search engine results pages (SERPs), many individual webmasters have reported fairly significant losses or gains in ranking over the past few days.

SEO Roadmap Carpooling With Content

If you’re reading this then chances are that you’re not an Internet purist. You don’t build websites for artistic reasons, spilling your guts about what is philosophically, transcendentally, or intrinsically eminent to your soul and being. You build sites to make money, pure and simple.
You utilize the famed “information super highway” by setting up shop by its off ramps, hoping somebody stops in. You are told that traffic brought in from the search engines is key to online success, and you’re determined to have a bus stop right outside your shop.

Take Control of Your Search Engine

Do a search on your favorite search engine for your company name. Look at the results. Hopefully your company web site is at the top of the pile. But what about the other 9 results in the top 10? What do they say about you?

People searching for your company name will often look at all of these results - not just those relating to your homepage. When their eyes skim down the results page what does this say about your company? Is it all good, relevant, up-to-date information? Are there any flame (bad) sites saying bad things about you or your company? Is there old information listed? What are people saying about you on forums and blogs? All this information can be scanned by people looking for your company.

Are You in for a Safe Landing? - PPC Landing Pages

You’ve paid for your ticket and your ads are up on Google AdWords and Yahoo’s Overture, but have you set up a safe landing for your clients?

Run a test landing. Do a search and find your Pay Per Click (PPC) ad in Yahoo or Google. Click on it. Where does it bring you? Your home page? I hope not. You should create a specific landing page for your PPC ads. A landing page is the page you create to convert your PPC traffic into sales. This page should get your potential customers (that you have already paid for!) to go exactly where you think they want to go.

Google Affected by Own Search Exploit

Drawing into question the safety of Google’s indexing system, the Web site all-in-one-business.com managed to “hijack” Google’s position in its search results with a 302 server redirect. Following the redirect, a query for “Google AdSense” returned results pointing to the unrelated site, rather than Google itself.

This type of incident can happen because of the way that Google implements the W3 HTTP specification. 302 redirects temporarily swap one domain name with another using rudimentary scripting. The spirit and letter of the specification requires Google to infer that content hosted by the 302 target is owned by the party doing the redirect.

Google Sitemaps: RSS For The Entire Website?

Well, not really. But Google Sitemaps does employ XML technology in order to provide its program members the opportunity to have their site crawled after they make updates or alterations.
Before we get ahead of ourselves and in case you haven’t heard, yesterday, Google launched Sitemaps, a “collaborative crawling” service designed to keep Google informed of modifications to your web site so their search index can reflect these changes… or as Rusty calls it, a free pay-for-inclusion program.

Gates Pans Google Again – Why Gates thinks Google

Gates Pans Google Again – Why Gates thinks Google
By Jim Hedger, StepForth News Editor, StepForth Placement Inc. (c) May 27, 2005

Bill Gates is blowing smoke at Google again. Twice this week Gates has said nasty things about Google. Yesterday he was sounding sort of high-school churlish with his statement, “Google is still perfect; the bubble is floating, and they can do everything. You should buy their stöck at any price. We had a 10-year period just like that.” Earlier today, he and his buddy, lil’ Stevie Ballmer, sounded like they were playing king-of-the-castle at recess when he predicted that Google was going to be dethroned because the other kids will want to play with new-tech toys that Microsoft has, but Google doesn’t.
