2010 Resolution - Give Your Website a Legal Check-Up

We all make New Year’s resolutions - some are personal, some are business or professional in nature. Even if we don’t actually make New Year’s resolutions, we engage in formal and informal “planning” as we look ahead to the new year.

If you operate a website, you’re probably aware that your website operations are now highly regulated. And the pace of legal regulations continues to accelerate.

Which means that you face an increasing risk of legal liability.

So, it’s a good idea to give your website a legal check-up and to update your site before it’s too late.

System Administration And Social Media Trends

It seems like just about every online thing is becoming “social” these days; Google Reader tries to recommend users’ lists to each other, blogs utilize Facebook Connect, and CNN.com even quotes Twitter users. Which sort of raises the question of whether social networking features could make system administrators’ lives easier.

Online forums have long proven immensely useful; there’s all sorts of information about cars, guns, and, well, everything floating around out there. Twitter and Facebook can be handy in a similar fashion while allowing people to provide even more immediate responses.

The FTC Needs to Shut Up!

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is one of the most unique parts of our government. It has a wide range of powers given by law, which encompass among other things the ability to pass rules and regulations against unfair and deceptive acts or practices. The FTC often issues “guidelines which are no more than notices that they will push for prosecution or civil action against individuals in violation their guidelines. Although these guidelines are often up for public debate, they are not passed by any governing body such as Congress, yet affect us often more than any newly passed law would. While many people see that the FTC is a consumer rights entity within the government, a growing number of people see that the FTC is a part of a growing, overreaching government that is interfering with the ability of businesses and often individuals to conduct business in this market economy.

Don’t Let Customers Tamper You With Coupons

Never underestimate the power of a good old-fashioned web forum for healthy discussion and tips that you can apply to your own business. Browsing through our own WebProWorld forum, I noticed an interesting conversation taking place regarding online coupons, and the potential for customers to tamper with them.

WPW member MarkGatESS began the discussion, “I’m interested in making online coupons that people can click on, be directed to a page, image file, or .pdf, and then print a copy of the coupon to use to send in with product repairs (for our repair service department). How can I secure this coupon so that people can’t tamper with wording or an expiration date and be able to rip us off?”

Quick! Answer this question: What do you think of when you hear the term “relationship marketing”? Getting to the Top of Search Engines Through One Way Linking

One way links are links that point to your site from others, but which are not linked to from your website. Google and many other search engines include link popularity as part of the way they evaluate and rank websites. Links are seen as a positive “vote” towards the quality of the website. As such, the more links from other relevant websites to yours, the better.

Here are some of the ways to get one way links pointing to your website.

Does Your Business Have A Use For Foursquare

Foursquare is a service that is getting a lot of attention these days, and that could make it an increasingly viable tool for local businesses. If you are not familiar with Foursquare, it’s a location-based social networking site an app for mobile devices. Have you used Foursquare?

Wikipedia provides a pretty good overview of it:

Killer Campaigns Volume 3 - Tell A Memorable Story

A rabbi, a priest, and a minister walk into a bar. The bartender looks up from polishing a glass and says, “What is this… a joke?” Ba-Dum-Tsssh!

A good story has a lot in common with a good marketing presentation, and one of the best ways to deliver your marketing message is in the form of a story. It’s how you turn advertising into content, and content into a memorable experience. Web marketing presentations must engage, enlighten, entertain, and above all be memorable. If you leave out any of these elements your presentation will suffer.

SEO Consulting Delivers Bottom Line Results

SEO consulting has evolved into a set of complementary disciplines that move your website into the top position for your category. Years ago, the search engines’ ranking algorithms were relatively static and simple. SEO consulting was focused almost entirely on site content and link popularity. The landscape shifted completely when Google launched their Florida Update in 2003. It marked the beginning of a new era in search. Today, the ranking algorithms change almost daily. Sites that were once listed in the top positions have since plummeted into the depths of the search engines’ organic listings. SEO consulting has become more important than ever for controlling your search territory.
